Gigolo Jane

Best Dressed: Sci-Fi Female Characters                                                                                                                                                                 Jane gigolo in Artificial Intelligence (2001)

In the year of 2001 Steven Spielberg made a not so great movie based off of a really cool short story.  AI Artificial Intelligence is a movie set in the future where both human and machine coexist.  Haley Joel Osment is a robotic boy who has dreams of becoming ‘real’ and truly gaining the love from his mother, as most humans would.  It was based off of a short story, Super- Toys Last All Summer, authored by Brian Aldiss and published in 1969.  It offers a theory of what society will be like in a futuristic world of intelligent machines and the decrease in humanity and free will as child creation becomes more and more controlled.

So technically Gigolo Jane is not a woman.  And when I say technically, what I really mean to say is she is not a woman.  Ashley Scott, plays the role of Gigolo Jane, a prostitute android who, when she is not doing what she was, well, made to do, she seems to be palling around with Gigolo Joe, played by Jude Law (who also has a stunning costume including the tailored leather coat).

She is barely in the movie and only has about one line;

“Hey, Joe, what do you know?”

“Hey Jane, what’s the game,” Jude Law (Gigolo Joe) rhythmically replies.

And boy did she leave an impression on us!  How could she not with her iridescent oxblood sectional jumpsuit.  Paco Rabanne worked on specific costumes in the movie including hers.  You can see his influence in the way the suit is sectioned off, almost as if the costume was apart of her skin, or I guess I should say shell.  Paco Rabanne seemed to be one with the machines for this project.

For Fall 12 we have seen the deep rich shades or burgundy, red, and purple all over the runways and now in the stores.  And where I don’t particularly like wearing jumpsuits, they really do look fabulous on anyone who can pull them off.  You don’t, however, need to like jumpsuits in order to be inspired by her costume.  Bringing her geek chicness into a modern day world was not as difficult as I anticipated as her attire is still relevant today.

All of what you see below is what I would wear with the characters uniform in mind.  I wouldn’t want to take it so literal which is why I wanted to bring in other types of materials and a slight difference in silhouette, but using the color and the attitude as the constant.  The point is to not copy the outfit completely, but to take the elements that speak to you and make it your own.  I love the piecing in this Derek Lam dress that I found and so it had to go on my Gigolo Jane wish list.  Mixing the genres of contrasting materials  in a monochromatic look, and pairing a great navy ring or turquoise necklace with it lets my own personality come through and not let Jane take over.

I remember my eyes darting from side to side on 17th street, making sure I didn’t miss ‘ the red dress.’  Not knowing what the dress looked like I kept my head up and my eyes open.  I was on a vintage mission and Shareen’s Vintage was my mission’s goal.  Finally my sights set upon the 50’s tulle red dress hanging over the fire escape.  No sign, just the dress- this was the place (also the rack of clothes outside was a nice little hint).

I set up the long stair case not fully sure of what to expect, but that’s part of the fun with these off the street vintage boutiques.  They are a private world where you can escape your own- and it was beautiful.  With multiple rooms full of clothes you can imagine the numerous decades I was allowed to be transported back to.  Racks of clothes filled the perimeter of two of the rooms with velvet couches set in the middle.  Magazines and candy were just there for my viewing and eating pleasure.  They offered water or wine while you browse through the vast array of garments and begin making a very large pile of chiffon dresses, jacquard skirts, and sequined jackets.  No men are allowed in the store in order to preserve the idea that you treat this store as if it were your own closet.  If you just want to sit and chat and look at the new September issue of Vogue and of course while sipping wine- you can.  I must have spent hours there dressing and chatting- like a surprise shopping cocktail party (awesome, I know).

Shareen doesn’t just sell great vintage clothes, but also designs her own.  Taking old vintage garments and reconstructing them to be more modern or just designing a line inspired from vintage silhouettes, there is something there for every woman.  I immediately fell in love with the dress and belt above (as well as a few other items, shhh).  It is the perfect 40’s gown down to every detail, including the slight ruching on the shoulders.  I can’t help, but to feel the way the movies siren’s looked in that time.  My heart stopped and my breaths got deeper as I twirled and glided in (what I new was going to become mine in a few short minutes) in the floor length sheer gown. Pairing it with faux leather hot pants and a little tank made it perfect for an early evening dinner after some great people watching in the village.

Sometimes I look a bit more chic than geek, but don’t worry looks can be deceiving…

Hope you enjoy!

I would properly like to thank the amazing Dylan Paige for her beautiful photography on this shoot.
